Thoughts To Ponder

All deception in the course of life is indeed nothing else but a lie reduced to practice, and falsehood passing from words into things.

Do You Have a Student or Are a Student that is Planning to Attend Auburn?

For most students the college experience is the first time in their to lives to be away from family and live on their own. Because of this, it is a time for greater independence and  responsibility. As they exercise this new found freedom to make their own choices they will also experience the consequences of those choices for both good and bad. The greatest choice that a student will make is whether or not he will serve God with all of his heart (Josh 24:15; Mt 22:37-39).

The prepared Christian understands the provisions the Lord has made to keep us in His love (Jude 20-21). The local church serves as a major bulwark against the assaults of Satan (Eph 4:14-16). At the University church of Christ we are dedicated to help every member to grow in the truth of God. We are committed to functioning as a local church should in not only having our assemblies be a place to be exhorted and encouraged, but we also work diligently to build up each other on a daily basis (Heb 10:23-25).

Opportunities in Our Work Together

We encourage every student who is a Christian to become a member of the University church. As  members we will work together in watching out for each other and in developing our talents to serve in God's kingdom. We have been blessed to have a large number of students who are active in working together and planning various events for mutual encouragement. Here is a list of some of the opportunities found at the University church.

1. We put a priority on  serving Jesus as our Lord (Lk 6:46). As a result we are careful to stay within His authority in all things (Col 3:17).

2. We are dedicated in having Christ-centered, Bible-centered preaching and teaching. We take care to give heed to proper doctrine and the spirit of love that must accompany it (1 Tim 4:12-16). All of our sermons and many of our class outlines and audio are posted to this website. Our beliefs are not held in a secret corner but proclaimed boldly and publicly. We welcome public scrutiny because we want all to know God's truth but also because we know that we are fallible and are thankful when others kindly correct us in any matter.

3. For our students we will have a Sunday Night devotional and singing in a home every two weeks. You may listen to our past devotionals that are also posted to our website.

4. We have an "adopt-a-student" program that encourages greater communication and involvement with the "resident" families and our students.

5. Every Christian in the church is encouraged to develop their talents to serve others. Men are trained and used to lead in public worship and preaching. We also work with developing teachers to be used in our Bible classes.

Articles About the College Experience

A Letter to a Son Going to College

by Rusty Miller

My Son,

As you prepare to go away to college, I thought I should warn you about some things the devil will use to attack you. Please do not think this is all he will do (remember 1 Peter 5:8), but I believe there are three areas in which he will attack with the most effort, and I wanted to offer advice on how to deal with each one.

The Temptation to Sin Sexually

At college, there will be more young women your age than you have ever known. A great many of them will dress provocatively, and indeed, many of them will have already been sexually active. Some of them, confused by such cultural phenomena as "Sex in The City," will promote the myth of "casual sex," the idea that sex is not a big deal, and can be engaged in without thought to consequences, particularly to the soul.

As I said, the idea is a myth. Besides the dangerous and troubling physical consequences of such action, there are eternal consequences that make this a matter of grave importance. From the beginning, sex was given by God to married couples, both for procreation (Gen. 1:28) and for pleasure (Song of Solomon). It is a significant part of the "one flesh" relationship designed for marriage. Outside of marriage, Paul says it is the only sin that one commits "against his own body" (1 Cor. 6:18).

In addition, there is great joy to be found in remaining pure until marriage. Being able to present yourself to your bride in a pure way is one of the greatest wedding gifts you can give her, and I hope you will make it your goal.

The Temptation to Sin with Alcohol

Among the biggest temptations facing college students away from home is the temptation to use alcohol. Many will tell you that alcohol is harmless, or that "one little drink is not going to hurt you." There are several things I would have you consider.
